How a violation reaches this record
Most rows here start with a tenant's call to 311. HPD schedules an inspection, and if an inspector confirms the condition, HPD issues a violation and mails the owner a Notice of Violation. From that point the violation is searchable on HPD Online by address. It stays on the public record used throughout this site until the agency accepts a correction or the agency closes the case another way. See how HPD, DOB, and OATH/ECB fit together.

By class
HPD sorts every electrical violation into one of three classes, and the class sets the correction window and how urgently an owner must act. In Bronx, HPD has issued 3,669 Class C electrical violations, immediately hazardous, correct within 24 hours. It has issued 13,392 Class B, hazardous, correct within 30 days, and 2,441 Class A, not hazardous, correct within 90 days.
Class C is 18.8% of the 19,503 electrical violations recorded in Bronx.
The certification record
Of 3,669 Class C electrical violations in Bronx, 1,365 have ever been certified corrected, 37.2%. Correction took a median of 12 days and a 90th percentile of 19 days. 1,378 have sat open more than a year with no certification on file.
3.5% of electrical violations in Bronx are currently marked Not Complied With, HPD's status once the certify-by date passes without an accepted certification.
After a certification is filed
Filing a certification does not automatically close a case. If HPD reviews the paperwork and finds it insufficient, the case moves to Defect Letter Issued and the owner must refile. If a reinspection later finds the condition still uncorrected despite a certification on file, the case moves to Invalid Certification. A certification accepted after the certify-by date is marked NOV Certified Late rather than on time; one accepted before it is marked NOV Certified On Time. Each of these statuses carries its own page in the status glossary, decoded in plain language.
