Every HPD status, and every OATH hearing outcome on a DOB summons, is decoded on the status codes page.
Questions about HPD violations
What do Class A, B and C mean?
The class is HPD's hazard rating, and it sets the time to correct. Class A is not hazardous and gets 90 days, Class B is hazardous and gets 30, and Class C is immediately hazardous and gets 24 hours for most conditions, with the exceptions in HPD's correction table. The time runs from the date the notice is served.
What does "open" mean on an HPD violation?
HPD marks every violation open or closed, and this page counts the ones HPD still marks open. A violation stays open until HPD closes or dismisses it, even after the repair is done.
How do I certify or clear an HPD violation?
The owner corrects the condition and certifies the correction with HPD within the time its class allows. HPD then tells the tenant, who can challenge the certification, and an inspector may come back to look. A violation that missed its certification time can need a Dismissal Request, an application with a fee that brings an inspector back. How a certificate of correction works.
Who do I call about an HPD violation?
Call the HPD Borough Service Center in the building's borough. Its Code Enforcement staff give information about the violations at a property and how to address them, and HPD lists each center's address and phone number on its Borough Service Centers page. HPD also books virtual and phone appointments with that office online. Help with a lead paint certification comes from HPD's Lead Hotline at 212-863-5501.
Is this the same data as HPD Online?
Yes. Both come from HPD's Housing Maintenance Code Violations data, which the city publishes on NYC Open Data. The open counts on this page cover every year the city holds and run to the date at the top of the page, so HPD Online can show violations recorded since. The second column counts only violations issued since . How we count.
Does a violation still show after the owner fixes it?
Yes, until HPD closes it. A certification is the owner's word that the work is done. If an inspector finds the condition still there, HPD marks it False Certification and the violation stays open.
Where the data comes from
HPD publishes every violation on NYC Open Data as Housing Maintenance Code Violations, and HPD Online shows the same violations one building at a time. Many begin as a tenant's complaint to 311.
A building page here adds what those two do not: OATH/ECB summonses and DOB matters on the same page as the HPD violations, the certifications filed against them, and, where the data allows, whether certifications are keeping up with new violations.
What an HPD violation is and how one moves through the agency: HPD violations, explained. Each class and its certification record: the class guide.
No owner or apartment is named on this page. Buildings appear by address, and only buildings with a page here.
